2025 Ford Escape Hybrid vs Gas Model: Which Is Best for Ontario Drivers?

Choosing between the 2025 Ford Escape Hybrid and the gas model can feel tricky. Both have strong points, and both are built to handle the mix of city streets and open highways we see here in Ontario. The hybrid is all about saving fuel and driving smoother, while the gas version brings more power and towing strength. Let’s look at how each one fits different needs so you can see which might be the better choice.

What’s different under the hood

In 2025 the Ford Escape in Canada comes with a few powertrain choices. There are gas-only versions: a 1.5 L EcoBoost three-cylinder engine, and a more powerful 2.0 L EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder. Then there’s the plug-in hybrid, that offers iVCT Atkinson Cycle I-4 hybrid engine

Fuel efficiency and driving range matter here

For many, the cost at the pump and how far you can go between fill-ups or charges are big deals.

  • The gas 1.5 L Escape with front-wheel drive is rated about 8.9 L/100 km city / 6.9 L/100 km highway.
  • The plug-in hybrid version has a very low equivalent fuel use (because for many trips it uses electric power). Its rating is about 2.3 Le/100 km (that is litres equivalent/100 km when using the electric portion) for everyday combined driving.

So if you drive a lot in city traffic, or prioritize fewer visits to the gas station, the plug-in wins. If most of your driving is highway, the gains are still real but a bit less.

Performance and capability differences

Performance and capability differences

The gas 2.0 L EcoBoost gives you more torque and towing ability. If you plan on towing (boat, trailer) or want faster acceleration, the gas version with 2.0 L offers more grunt.

Hybrid versions focus more on smooth ride, quieter driving (especially at lower speeds) thanks to regenerative braking and electric assist. Plug-in hybrid does well off the line when electric power is used. Snowy winters make first-mile torque helpful. Hybrid models also help with cold-start fuel consumption somewhat, though battery performance in very cold weather can reduce electric-only range.

Cargo and interior space are similar, though plug-in hybrid loses a bit of cargo room behind first row compared to gas because of battery packaging.

Price and long-term value

In Canada the Escape lineup starts around $33,506*. Plug-in Hybrid can reach about $39,617*.

Gas models cost less up front. Hybrids cost more because of electric motors and battery, plug-in more again. But fuel savings over time can offset the extra cost for many drivers. For example if you drive ~30,000 km/year, fuel costs on the gas model may be several thousand dollars more than the hybrid. The plug-in hybrid, when used with electric charging regularly, saves more.

Maintenance costs for hybrid systems are generally a bit higher for parts like the battery (though Ford offers warranties). But less wear on brakes (thanks to regenerative braking) and less idling fuel waste help.

Resale value for hybrids and plug-ins is becoming stronger in Canada especially in urban areas where people care about emissions or where fuel is more expensive.

Which fits your life in Carleton Place & Ontario

If you mostly drive locally (town, errands, school runs) and care about saving fuel, avoiding gas station visits, or being kinder to the environment, then the Hybrid or Plug-in Hybrid is likely better for you. Winters are cold here. If you get the plug-in, you’ll want a way to charge at home. Battery range in the cold may drop, so you’ll still rely on the gas component sometimes.

Final thoughts

If you want lower fuel bills, quieter ride, and less environmental impact pick the Hybrid or Plug-in Hybrid. If you want more power, more towing, or often drive on highways or rugged roads, the Gas 2.0 L Escape could be better.
